thrawn's Rams 2013 Mock Draft

Don't Trade Up!

Redo of Rams draft without trading up in the 1st or 5th. 10 players, filling more holes, and I believe having more overall impact to improve the team.

Show/Hide Player Comments 1st (8th) UT Sharrif Floyd Florida Jr 6'2 5/8" 298 lbs. 5.17

Analysis: We undo the #8 trade, and this pick turns into Floyd, plus:
#46 Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
#222 - Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio State - Athletic development prospect for RT

Show/Hide Player Comments 1st (30th) SS Johnathan Cyprien Florida International Sr 6'0 1/4" 209 lbs. 4.56

Analysis: I think safety is a much more glaring hole than OLB, and we can take a less risky pick. Taking risks here and there can pay off, but too many risks can hurt...and I prefer my risks to be later picks than 1st rounders. Although I also like Elam, I take Cyprien over him partly for size reasons. I don't think Elam can cover in the NFC West.

Show/Hide Player Comments 3rd (71st) WLB Khaseem Greene Rutgers rSr 6'0 1/2" 236 lbs. 4.60

Analysis: Note, by undoing the #8 trade, this pick moves back a few spots. Although in true hindsight, we know Greene lasted to early round 4, I'd have grabbed him here. He isn't the athlete Ogletree is, but he's a safer pick, is good in coverage, and is a decent athlete. Overall, I think he's a good fit with the Rams as a weak side linebacker, moving Dunbar to SLB.

Analysis: Love the Bailey pick. I'll keep him.

Show/Hide Player Comments 4th (113th) OC Barrett Jones Alabama rSr 6'4 1/4" 305 lbs. 4.97

Analysis: Love the Jones pick. I'll keep him. He gives us a versatile backup this year, and takes over at C in 2014 to free up a ton of money.

Show/Hide Player Comments 5th (149th) WR Ryan Swope Texas A&M rSr 6'0 1/4" 204 lbs. 4.52

Analysis: Adding another speedy target to our WR core. He's pretty much limited to being a slot receiver. I like slot receivers on day 3 instead of pick 8. His hands aren't as good as Austin, but he's got all the speed.

Show/Hide Player Comments 5th (160th) FS Bacarri Rambo Georgia rSr 6'0 1/2" 215 lbs. 4.52

Analysis: Undo Stacy Trade, getting back #184 and #198

Doubling up on safety. Rambo could compete for a starting job, but should at least be a very solid special teamer and a rotation guy. He's a character risk, but it's round 6. We can take risks here.

With my extra pick, I also grab Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State. He went undrafted, but we need some corner depth, and could do worse.

This draft builds for 2013 and beyond addressing a lot of next year's openings by giving us a year to develop players. As many as 7 starters could come out of this draft in 2013 (although 4-5 is more likely) and we have replacements developing for 2014 holes (or cap cuts) DT, C, and RT.
