Show/Hide All Player Comments Round (Overall) Pos Name College Cls Height Weight 40
Show/Hide Player Comments 1st (29th) WLB Shaq Thompson Washington Jr 6'1 5/8" 231 lbs. 4.56

Analysis: Inside linebacker was a mess last year for Green Bay to the point they pulled Clay Matthews from being a full time outside linebacker to being a part time inside linebacker. This changes with them taking Thompson here. Many project him as a 4-3 OLB or a safety but he's big and fast enough to be a playmaker as a 3-4 ILB and he and Sam Barrington could be the best young LB duo in the game. All and all Thompson is a top tier athlete and a top tier football player and the Pack will grab if he's available.

Show/Hide Player Comments 2nd (29th) NT Carl Davis Iowa rSr 6'4 1/4" 315 lbs. 5.12

Analysis: BJ Raji may be gone for good in Green Bay and Letroy Guion is in legal trouble. The Packers have no real nose tackle so they grab Davis here to help build that young defensive line to go along with Mike Daniels and Datone Jones.

Show/Hide Player Comments 3rd (29th) TE Nick O'Leary Florida St. Sr 6'2 3/4" 238 lbs. 4.84

Analysis: Packers have some nice tight ends with Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless but adding someone like O'Leary to learn the NFL game and develop for the future would be a good investment.

Show/Hide Player Comments 4th (29th) CB Ladarius Gunter Miami (FL) rSr 6'1 1/8" 196 lbs. 4.52

Analysis: Both Tramon Williams and Davon House are free agents and the Packers can't keep both and Casey Hayward is a free agent next year so the Packers keep the cornerback positions loaded by taking Gunter who gets comapred to Tharold Simon from the Legion of Boom. He's tall and has long arms and would be an excellent corner across from Sam Shields.

Show/Hide Player Comments 5th (29th) WR Tre McBride William & Mary Sr 6'1 1/8" 205 lbs. 4.44

Analysis: The Packers take McBride here not to be an offensive weapon but as the new special teams returner. McBride goes 6'1 with a 4.4 40 time. He would be an upgrade over anybody, even Randall Cobb, that the Packers used last year and could give Aaron Rodgers and the offense better field position. He could also learn how to play receiver in the NFL.

Show/Hide Player Comments 6th (29th) SILB Trey DePriest Alabama Sr 6'1 5/8" 245 lbs. 4.68

Analysis: Packers double dip on the inside linebacker spot and take DePriest who was Alabama's captain of defense. The Packers are expected to cut both AJ Hawk and Brad Jones and let Jamarri Lattimore leave in free agency. That would leave Sam Barrington, Carl Bradford and Shaq Thompson as the only ILBs on the roster. DePriest would be a good depth player and be a special teams contributer.

Show/Hide Player Comments 7th (29th) QB Taylor Heinicke Old Dominion Sr 6'0 5/8" 205 lbs. 4.76

Analysis: Packers need to develop a young backup for Aaron Rodgers lest Packers fans have to watch in horror as Matt Flynn's noodle arm tries to throw 30 yard bombs to nobody. Heinicke is an interesting prospect and would be a good project for Mike McCarthy as Heinieke already has the quick release that's become Aaron Rodgers' trademark and has good field vision but needs to be polished up and would under Rodgers.
