1st (27th) SILB Reggie Ragland - Alabama
Analysis: Mike McCarthy declared that Clay Matthews would move back to outside linebacker at his end of season presser which leaves a talent gap at the position. Sam Barrington is returning from a season ending injury and Jake Ryan was okay in run defense and better in coverage. The depth at the position is also lacking talent.
The Packers take Ragland who would be the thumper in the middle with Barrington and be a presence the Packers have been lacking in the middle linebacking corps for a long time.
2nd (26th) NT Austin Johnson - Penn St.
Analysis: BJ Raji's sudden retirement and Mike Pennell's suspension leaves the Packers with a huge gap in the middle of the line so they take Austin Johnson who can anchor the line in the middle and can also move to the three technique as a pass rusher.
3rd (25th) 34OLB Jordan Jenkins - Georgia
Analysis: Julius Peppers and Nick Perry are in the final year of their contracts so the Packers need to add depth to the pass rush so they take Jenkins who's career at Georgia was overshadowed by fellow prospect Leonard Floyd but Jenkins flashed run defense skills last year and while he didn't stand out at the combine or senior bowl he's getting better and could peak in the pros.
4th OT Spencer Drango - Baylor
Analysis: 3/5th of the Packers offensive line is in their contract year as well as presumed swing tackle JC Tretter. Adding depth and possible replacements is needed so they take Drango here who's played both guard and tackle. He could compete to be the right swing tackle or a backup guard and possibly be a starter in 2017.
4th HB C.J. Prosise - Notre Dame
Analysis: Eddie Lacy is in his contract year and while recent photos indicate that he's lost the weight Mike McCarthy wanted him to lose and then some it's not a guarantee he'll be resigned although he could be rewareded with one for the commitment to football. Meanwhile James Starks was resigned to a 2 year deal but he's still got a fumbling problem and isn't a pass catching threat. That's why the Packers take Prosise who emerged when asked to play running back and could figure into the Packers plans early to keep Lacy fresh for later part of the season. He's got breakaway speed and good vision for a raw running back and could be a day 3 steal.
4th (27th) TE Tyler Higbee - Western Kentucky
Analysis: Packers signed Jared Cook to a one year deal which may or may not work out for them so they need insurance in keeping the tight end group strong by taking Higbee. Although he was slowed down by injury last season Higbee flashed tremendous down the field potential and a nightmare mismatch for defenses. His blocking needs work so he's likely to be a bench player at best and if Cook flounders and Richard Rodgers continues to stagnate Higbee could see extensive time during the season especially if he gains Aaron Rodgers' trust early.
5th (24th) SILB Joe Schobert - Wisconsin
Analysis: Packers continue to add depth to the linebacker corps by taking the homestate product Schobert. He's very versatile and can play as both a 3-4 OLB or kick inside to inside linebacker.
6th (25th) 34DE Lawrence Thomas - Michigan St.
Analysis: The Packers have seemingly given up on Datone Jones being an offensive lineman and are working on him possibly being an OLB. He could also be in a contract year depending if the team picks up his 5th year option. That leaves the defensive line with little depth with Mike Pennell's suspension so they team takes Thomas to add depth and compete with 2015 6th rounder Christian Ringo (who Mike McCarthy and Dom Capers really like) for their spot on the depth chart.
7th (27th) OT Caleb Benenoch - UCLA
Analysis: More depth for the offensive line as Benenoch is a very raw tackle with a ton of potential. He would be drafted higher in next years draft had he stayed with UCLA for one more season so he'll be work in progress, especially in his pass protection, but has the athletic upside to be a starter.
